Taiwan is a mountainous, seismically active island. In fact, mountains account for about one-third of Taiwan’s land area, with a range stretching in a rough north-south line down the center of the island. Those mountains comprise the island’s main watershed, and water is plentiful thanks to ocean currents and breezes that deliver warm, moist air, periodic monsoon rains, and several typhoons each year.
The rugged topography and abundant water make for well-vegetated mountains, but this combination also leads to landslides. On December 17, 2010, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) captured this natural-color image of landslide-scarred mountains in central Taiwan.
As a professor of geography at Durham University (U.K.), David Petley has tracked numerous landslides in Taiwan, including a large one that struck northern Taiwan in April 2010 (beyond the area shown above). Petley notes that typhoons frequently ravage the region and cause flash floods and landslides. Typhoon Morakot and Typhoon Megi are two recent examples.
“The passage of typhoons past or across Taiwan often leads to the generation of exceptionally high rainfall totals,“ he notes. ”When combined with the steep topography and weak rocks, the rain inevitably triggers extensive landsliding.” Some landslide mitigation methods include mountain braces, such as those employed in Chiayi County.

Hazy skies greeted many Americans on June 8, 2011, as poor air quality dominated from the Midwest to the Atlantic Seaboard. There were several causes, but Arizona’s Wallow Fire was a major contributor. Thick bands of smoke were visible in satellite images of the Midwest, and forecasts called for the smoke to move into the central and eastern United States. On top of that, weather conditions—high temperatures, calm winds—were just right for a classic summer pollution event in the East.
One of the constituents of both smoke and urban pollution is carbon monoxide. This map, made with data from the Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) sensor on the Terra satellite, shows carbon monoxide concentrations over the United States and southern Canada between May 25 and June 8. Dark red pixels reveal high concentrations.
In the United States, most carbon monoxide pollution comes from vehicles and other machinery that burn gasoline; fires are a distant third in the rankings. In this image, however, fires were clearly a significant source of carbon monoxide. A dense plume flows east from the Wallow Fire in Arizona, with a fainter plume rising from the Horseshoe 2 fire in the south. The bands of smoke shown in visible satellite images are also evident in the carbon monoxide map.
A second source of carbon monoxide is Alberta, Canada, where large wildfires are burning. A forecast from the GEOS-5 model (select “environmental,” then click on the map) shows carbon monoxide from both fires moving east and converging over the eastern United States. Carbon monoxide measurements from the AIRS instrument on the Aqua satellite also track smoke moving east between June 3 and June 6.
Finally, the map shows high carbon monoxide concentrations along the Atlantic Seaboard. Some of this carbon monoxide may be from the fires, but some of it comes from urban pollution as well. A high-pressure weather system brought in still air that allowed pollution to build up. The system also brought sunny skies and high temperatures that resulted in the formation of ground-level ozone.
In high concentrations, carbon monoxide can harm human health by reducing oxygen to the heart and brain. Carbon monoxide is also one of the chemicals that create ozone pollution and urban smog.
Poor air quality continued to plague the eastern United States on June 9, when the air was expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups in more than 80 cities, triggering air quality action days in 49 locations.

Ah! Great Babalù! I'm so lost and forsaken.
Ah great Babalù, bring back the love you've taken.
You can restore all the dreams that once were mine
If only you'll use some mystic sign.
Ah! Great Babalù! Bring her back to me.

Ah! Great Babalù! I'm so lost and forsaken.
Ah great Babalù, bring back the love you've taken.
You can restore all the dreams that once were mine
If only you'll use some mystic sign.

Ancient jungle rites.

Raise their arms to skies above
A a native stepped forward to chant to
his Voodoo Godess of love.
Ah!

CHORUS
Great Babalu!
I 'm so lost and forsaken
Ah, great Babalu

Amarti m'affatica mi svuota dentro
Qualcosa che assomiglia a ridere nel pianto
Amarti m'affatica mi da' malinconia
Che vuoi farci è la vita
E' la vita, la mia
Amami ancora fallo dolcemente
Un anno un mese un'ora perdutamente
Amarti mi consola le notti bianche
Qualcosa che riempie vecchie storie fumanti
Amarti mi consola mi da' allegria
Che vuoi farci è la vita
E' la vita, la mia
Amami ancora fallo dolcemente
Un anno un mese un'ora perdutamente
Amami ancora fallo dolcemente
Solo per un'ora perdutamente

In mythology and astrology, Aquarius is known as the water-bearer. For NASA, Aquarius is the space agency's first new Earth-watching tool—actually, water-watching—since 2008.
At 7:20:13 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on June 10, 2011, the Aquarius/SAC-D observatory was launched on a Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. About an hour later, the satellite separated from the rocket's second stage, established communication with ground controllers, and unfurled its solar arrays. Initial reports showed the observatory to be in excellent health, and operators will spend the next few weeks maneuvering it into a polar orbit and turning on the sensors.
The satellite is a joint project of Argentina's Comision Nacionale de Actividades Espaciales, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The full name of the spacecraft is the Satelite de Aplicaciones Cientificas-D, or SAC-D. Aquarius is a key instrument that will make NASA's first space observations of the salt content, or salinity, of the ocean.
Salinity has traditionally been measured from ships and robotic ocean sensors. Aquarius will map the open ocean once every seven days for at least three years, allowing scientists to make the first global maps of salinity in the surface layer. Observing changes in salinity helps scientists understand ocean circulation and currents, the global water cycle, and other fundamental features of the seas.
In addition to Aquarius, SAC-D carries seven instruments that will monitor natural hazards and collect a broad range of environmental data. Other mission partners include Brazil, Canada, France and Italy.
