Kaokoland - The Himba
Portraits / October 2009

The Himba socieities living in Namibia's arid, rugged Kaokoland region are visually unique. Himba women combine ochre and buttermilk to incredible effect: the skin glows with a metallic red sheen that sits over an earthy brown base.

What results is a colour and effect rarely ever seen elsewhere, perhaps with the exception of small parts of Hamer women (i.e. the neck and hair) living in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia. The combination of colour and reflectivity of light on female Himba skin is an incredibly powerful vision, and my aim was to capture some of the these effects through this series.

Not so long ago, many islands rose above the brackish waters of the Chesapeake Bay. These small islands offered a predator-free haven for nesting water birds and turtles, while the larger islands supported fishing communities along with wildlife. But now, the muddy, marshy islands are eroding under the combined forces of geology and climate change. The very crust under the Chesapeake Bay is sinking, while sea levels are rising. Made of clay and silt, the islands erode quickly, and many have disappeared altogether.
Poplar Island ranks among those that would have been gone a decade ago if not for a massive restoration project. In the 1800s, the island had an area just over 1,000 acres and held a small town of about 100 people. By the 1990s, the island was nearly gone, containing a mere 10 acres of land. In the left image, taken by the Landsat 5 satellite on June 28, 1997, Poplar Island had been reduced to a tiny green dot surrounded by clouds of silt-laden water.
In 1998, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers began to restore Poplar Island. The project serves two purposes: it restores lost habitat to birds and turtles, and it provides a use for material dredged from Baltimore Harbor and Chesapeake Bay shipping lanes. The method of restoration is visible in the center image, taken on June 21, 2006. Engineers built dikes around sections of the island and have been gradually filling in the center with dredged silt. By 2006, the island had regained the shape it held in the 1800s.
As each cell is filled with new soil, the Army Corp of Engineers plants vegetation. The right image, taken on July 5, 2011, shows that much of the island has been re-vegetated. Poplar Island now has an area of 1,140 acres and may continue to expand by another 500 acres before the restoration is completed in 2027. Upon completion, Poplar Island will be half wetlands and half uplands covered by forest. The restoration project is expected to cost $667 million, says the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
Islands and shorelines in the Mid-Atlantic may become increasingly vulnerable to erosion. Sea levels are rising as the ocean warms and expands—and as glaciers and ice sheets melt—but the rise isn't uniform around the planet. Currents, salinity, and topography create areas where sea levels are increasing more quickly, and recent research found that the U.S. Mid-Atlantic coast is one of the areas of accelerated sea-level rise. The rate of increase in the densely populated Mid-Atlantic is three to four times greater than average global sea-level rise. The increased sea level will make coastal regions and islands more prone to flooding and erosion.
A short animation of the Poplar Island restoration is available from the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio.

Music: Bernadette Peters - Raining in My Heart - Time Heals Everything - Not A Day Goes By - Unexpected Song - 4 Vids with the Lyrics

Bernadette Peters - Raining in My Heart

babay Pitter, patter what's the matter with me?
Pitter, patter rain is all that I see.
Where is my raincoat?
It's here somewhere.
Why wear a raincoat
The weather's fair.
But ever since I saw him depart
It's been raining, raining in my heart.

Where are my rubbers to ford the storm?
What good are rubbers outside its warm.
But ever since heaven fell apart
It's been raining, raining in my heart.
Once I saw a cottage on sunshine lane a fairy palace in disguise.
I don't see it now it must be rain that’s getting in my eyes.
Where’s my umbrella and where’s my guy.
I need my fella to keep me dry.
It won't help if the sunshine should start
‘cause it's raining in my heart.

Time Heals Everything

[Mabel]
Time heals everything
Tuesday
Thursday
Time heals everything
April
August
If I'm patient the break will mend
And one fine morning the hurt will end
So make the moments fly
Autumn
Winter
I'll forget you by
Next year
Some year
Tho' it's hell that I'm going through
Some Tuesday
Thursday
April
August
Autumn
Winter
Next year
Some year
Time heals everything
Time heals everything
But loving you.

So make the moments fly
Autumn
Winter
I'll forget you by
Next year
Some year
Though it's hell that I'm going through
Some Tuesday
Thursday
April August
Autumn winter
Next year
Some year
Time heals everything
Time heals everything
But loving you!

Not A Day Goes By

Not A Day Goes By lyrics
Stephen Sondheim

Not a day goes by
Not a single day
But you’re somewhere a part of my life
And it looks like you’ll stay
As the days go by
I keep thinking when does it end
Where’s the day I’ll have started forgetting
But I just go on thinking and sweating

And cursing and crying
And turning and reaching
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/carly-simon-lyrics/not-a-day-goes-by-lyrics.html ]
And waking and dying
And no, not a day goes by
Not a blessed day
But you’re still somehow part of my life
And you won't go away
So there’s hell to pay
And until I die
I’ll die day after day after day
After day
After day after day after day
Til the days go by
Til the days go by
Til the days go by

Unexpected Song

Lyrics to Unexpected Song
Andrew Lloyd Webber

have never felt like this
For once I'm lost for words
Your smiles has really thrown me.
This is not like me at all
I never thought I'd know
The kind of love you've shown me.

Now, no matter where I am
No matter what I do
I see your face appearing
Like an unexpected song
An unexpected song
That only we are hearing

I don't know what's going on
Can't work it out at all
Whatever made you choose me?
I just can't believe my eyes
You look at me as though
You couldn't bare to lose me.

Now, no matter where I am
No matter what I do
I see your face appearing
Like an unexpected song
An unexpected song
That only we are hearing

I have never felt like this
For once I'm lost for words
Your smiles has really thrown me.
This is not like me at all
I never thought I'd know
The kind of love you've shown me.

Now no matter where I am
No matter what I do
I see your face appearing
Like an unexpected song
An unexpected song
That only we are hearing
Like an unexpected song
An unexpected song
That only we are hearing

NASA: Spain - Fires in Eastern - Valencia - 04.07.12

acquired June 30, 2012 download large image (718 KB, JPEG, 2000x1600)
Wildfires burned around Valencia in eastern Spain in late June 2012. As water-bombing aircraft flew overhead, about 3,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes, news reports said. The fires followed one of the driest winters in decades, and raged amid temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), low humidity, and high winds.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image on June 30, 2012. Red outlines approximate the locations of active fires.
The fires burned in rugged, wooded terrain west of Valencia, Agence France-Presse reported, and smoke reached the city on June 30. As this image shows, both fires sent thick smoke toward the northeast, and smoke from the fire southwest of Valencia passed directly over the city.

Floods and landslides caused dozens of casualties in northeastern India in late June and early July 2012. By July 1, the death toll stood at 77, The Hindu reported. As of that date, the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries had breached more than 40 levees. Reuters India reported that thousands of homes, mostly made of bamboo and straw, had washed away in days of torrential rains. The floods also breached roads and bridges, and downed power lines.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured the top image on July 2, 2012. For comparison, the bottom image shows the same area, observed by MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite, just two weeks earlier. These images use a combination of visible and infrared light to better distinguish between water and land. Water varies from electric blue to navy, vegetation is bright green, and clouds are pale blue-green.
By July 2, 2012, the Brahmaputra River had spilled over its banks throughout the region pictured here. Water pooled on floodplains north and south of the river, with especially extensive areas of flood water south of Tezpur.
Reuters India reported that, while the Indian state of Assam coped with severe floods, other parts of the country experienced monsoon rains that were lower than average, and the dry conditions jeopardized some crops.

He aquí la virgen-del-martillo,
para moler los sótanos de tierra
cuyo horrible nivel el cráneo
del perro estelar siente subir.

Traducción: Miguel Frontán

Noche

de Oeuvres complètes (tome I)

la lluvia vuelve a ascender hasta la luna;
en la avenida una ventana
nos revela una mujer desnuda.

En los odres de las sábanas hinchadas
en los que respira la noche entera
el poeta siente que sus cabellos
crecen y se multiplican.

El rostro obtuso de los techos
contempla los cuerpos extendidos.
Entre el suelo y los pavimentos
la vida es una pitanza profunda.

Poeta, lo que te preocupa
nada tiene que ver con la luna;

alrededor de los vasos;
humo de vinos, humo de vasos
y de las pipas de la tarde.

En el ángulo oblicuo de los techos
de todos los aposentos que tiemblan
se acumulan los humos marinos
de los sueños mal construidos.

Porque aquí se cuestiona la Vida
y el vientre del pensamiento;
las botellas chocan los cráneos
de la asamblea áerea.

El Verbo brota del sueño
como una flor o como un vaso
lleno de formas y de humos.

El vaso y el vientre chocan:
la vida es clara
en los cráneos vitrificados.

El areópago ardiente de los poetas
se congrega alrededor del tapete verde,
el vacío gira.

La vida pasa por el pensamiento
del poeta melenudo.

Poesia: Alfonsina Storni - Part 15 - Odio - Piedra Miserable - El racimo inocente - Frente al mar - Links

ODIO

Oh, primavera de las amapolas,
Tú que floreces para bien mi casa,
Librodot Poesías Alfonsina Storni
Luego que enjoyes las corolas,
Pasa.

Beso, la forma más voraz del fuego,
Clava sin miedo tu endiablada espuela,
Quema mi alma, pero luego,
Vuela.

Risa de oro que movible y loca
Sueltas el alma, de las sombras, presa,
En cuanto asomes a la boca,
Cesa.

Lástima blanda del error amante
Que a cada paso el corazón diluye,
Vuelca tus mieles y al instante,
Huye.

Odio tremendo, como nada fosco,
Odio que truecas en puñal la seda,
Odio que apenas te conozco,
Queda.

PIEDRA MISERABLE

Oh, piedra dura, miserable piedra,
Oh piedra dura, miserable piedra.

Pero haces bien, oh miserable piedra,
Deja que tiente un golpe sobrehumano,
Deja golpear, deja golpear mi mano,
Oh piedra dura, miserable piedra.

No me des nada, miserable piedra,
Guarda un silencio altivo y soberano,
No te ablandes jamás entre mi mano;
Oh piedra dura, miserable piedra.

Con tu impiedad, oh miserable piedra,
Recobro alientos y el deseo gano,
No te dejes caer sobre mi mano,
Mezquina, estulta, miserable piedra

Vulgaridad, vulgaridad me acosa.

Todo dolor me vence, todo sueño;
Mar, dame, dame el inefable empeño
De tornarme soberbia, inalcanzable.

Dame tu sal, tu yodo, tu fiereza,
¡Aire de mar!... ¡Oh tempestad, oh enojo!
Desdichada de mí, soy un abrojo,
Y muero, mar, sucumbo en mi pobreza.

Y el alma mía es como el mar, es eso,
Ah, la ciudad la pudre y equivoca
Pequeña vida que dolor provoca,
¡Que pueda libertarme de su peso!

Vuele mi empeño, mi esperanza vuele...
La vida mía debió ser horrible,
Debió ser una arteria incontenible
Y apenas es cicatriz que siempre duele.
