In the spring of 2011, the Mississippi River swelled to historic levels, rising out of its banks, rolling across a wide flood plain, and eating at flood barriers. The story in 2012 could not be more different; the river has approached record-low levels in places.
The contrast is illustrated in these two images, which show a stretch of the river just south of Memphis, Tennessee. Landsat 7 captured the top image on August 8, 2012, while Landsat 5 took the lower image on August 14, 2011. (The images are rotated so that north is to the left.) In the August 2011 image, the river was three months removed from the peak of the floods, and river gauges recorded levels close to normal for the month. In August 2012, water was several feet below the historic normal stage for Memphis, and many sandbars were newly exposed or greatly expanded.
As of August 17, 2012, river gauges in the Memphis region recorded levels at -2.4 to -8.3 feet (below historic normal stage). At the time of the August 2011 image (lower), the river stage was 11.7 feet. (In May 2011, the river peaked at 56.6 feet in the same location.)
The Mississippi River is a major North American transit route, carrying goods to and from ports in New Orleans and Baton Rogue. The top image shows that low water levels have narrowed the river from a superhighway to a small road. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers maintains a 9-foot shipping channel in the lower Mississippi and has dredges working around the clock to keep the channel clear. Not only are water levels low in 2012, but the floods of 2011 dropped a layer of sediment on the riverbed, reshaping previously open channels.
The reduced river flow in 2012 has translated into millions of dollars in extra shipping costs, as the loss of just one inch of draft means that a barge can carry 17 tons less than it otherwise would. The result is decreased shipping capacity.
Reduced water levels had one positive impact: The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has been able to access and repair levees that were damaged in last year’s floods. The levees are the tan lines that surround the river in these images.
The low water levels followed record-setting temperatures and dry weather. By the end of July, 63 percent of the contiguous United States was in drought, affecting both crops and water supplies.

NASA: Pacific Ocean - China - Hong Kong - Philippines - Vietnam - Typhoon Kai-tak - It is happening now - 16.08.12

Typhoon Kai-tak
acquired August 16, 2012 download large image (11 MB, JPEG, 7200x9400)
After strengthening into a typhoon, Kai-tak continued its approach of the China coast on August 16, 2012. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image the same day. Kai-tak lacked a clear eye, but had the apostrophe shape typical of strong storms.
The U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) forecast that Kai-tak would continue its movement toward the west-northwest, passing over China’s Leizhou Bandao peninsula and northern Vietnam on August 17 and 18. As of August 16, the JTWC reported, Kai-tak was located roughly 195 nautical miles (360 kilometers) south-southeast of Hong Kong, with maximum sustained winds of 65 knots (120 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 80 knots (150 kilometers per hour). The JTWC forecast that Kai-tak would strengthen somewhat over the next 12 hours before weakening slightly.
State news agency Xinhua reported that China’s national disaster relief authority had issued an alert for Kai-tak on August 15. The typhoon was expected to impact Guangdong and Fujian Provinces, and bring as much as 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain to the Pearl River Delta west of Hong Kong.
Typhoon Kai-tak was the fourth storm to make landfall in eastern China in just over two weeks, following Typhoons Saola, Damrey, and Haikui.

Zwei Armen, derer Kraft oft Leuen hingericht,

Der liebliche Korall der Lippen wird verbleichen;

Die werden teils zu Staub, teils nichts und nichtig werden;

serán en parte polvo, en parte nulos, nada;

Poesia: Edgard Allan Poe - Antologia - Parte 10 - Ulalume - Estrellas Fijas (To Hellen) - Links

ULALUME

I

Los cielos cenicientos y sombríos,
crespas las hojas, lívidas y mustias,
y era una noche del doliente octubre
del tiempo inmemorial entre las brumas,
era en las tristes márgenes del Auber,
el lago tenebroso de aguas mudas,
ante los bosques tétricos del Weir,
la región espectral de la pavura.

II

A solas con mi alma, recorría
avenida titánica y oscura
de fúnebres cipreses... con mi alma,
con Psiquis, alma que, al misterio turba...
Era la edad del corazón volcánico
como las llamas del Yanek sulfúreas,
como las lavas del Yanek que brotan
allá del polo en la región nocturna.

III

Pocas palabras nos dijimos, era
como una confidencia íntima y muda;
palabras serias, pensamientos graves
que la memoria para siempre turban;

IV

Y cuando la noche ya avanza
de estrellas al vago tremer,
al fin de la oscura avenida
un lánguido rayo se ve,
fulgor diamantino que anuncia
de fúnebre velo al través,
que emerge de nube fantástica
la Luna, la blanca Astarté.

V

Y yo dije a mi alma: «Más que Diana
ardiente, aquella misteriosa Luna
rueda al través de un éter de suspiros;

VI

Mas Psiquis dijo señalando al Cielo:
«La palidez de ese astro me conturba;
pronto, huyamos de aquí, pronto, es preciso.»
Y de sus alas recogió las plumas
con intenso terror, y sollozando,
presa de pronto de invencible angustia
plegó las alas, hasta el polvo frío
lentas dejando descender las plumas.

VII

Y yo le dije: «Tu terror es vano,
sigamos esa luz trémula y pura,
que nos bañen sus rayos cristalinos,
sus rayos sibilinos que ya auguran
e irradian la belleza y la esperanza.
Mira: la senda de los cielos busca;
sigamos sin temor sus limpios rayos
que ellos a playa llevarán segura,
sigamos esa luz limpia y tranquila
a través de la bóveda cerúlea.

VIII

Tranquilicé a mi Psiquis, y besándola,
de su mente aparté las inquietudes
y sus zozobras disipé profundas,
y convencerla que siguiera pude.
Llegamos hasta el fin; ¡ojalá nunca
llegara! Al fin de la avenida lúgubre
nos detuvo la puerta de una tumba
(¡oh, triste noche del lejano octubre!)
nos detuvo la losa de una tumba,
de legendario monumento fúnebre.
¡Oh, hermana!—dije—¿Qué inscripción confusa
en la sellada losa se descubre?
Respondiome: «Ulalume», esta es su tumba,
¡la tumba de tu pálida Ulalume!

IX

¡Oh! ¿Qué infernal espíritu me trajo
a esta región fatal de la tristura?
Bien reconozco el mudo lago de Auber,
y esta comarca que el horror anubla,
y el bosque fantasmático de Weir,
la región espectral de la pavura!

ESTRELLAS FIJAS

(TO HELEN)

I

Te vi un punto;
sobre el parque adormecido gráciles velos de plata;
ni una ráfaga
el infinito silencio
y la quietud perturbaban;
en aquella noche mágica;
como en una muerte extática;

III

¿Qué hado extraño
(¿fué ventura, fué desgracia?)
me condujo
susurraba;

IV

¡Noche oscura,
ya Diana
entre turbios nubarrones hundió la faz plateada;
y tú sola
en medio de la avenida
funeraria,
te deslizas
ideal, mística y blanca,
te deslizas y te alejas incorpórea cual fantasma;
sólo flotan tus miradas,
sólo tus ojos perennes,
tus ojos de hondas miradas
fijos quedan!
y me prosterno ante ellos con adoración extática;
y en el día
no se ocultan cual se ocultó mi esperanza;
por todas partes me siguen mirándome fijamente
en mi espíritu clavadas...
¡Misteriosas y lejanas
me persiguen tus miradas
DREAMLAND

I

En una senda abandonada y triste
que recorren tan sólo ángeles malos,
una extraña Deidad la negra Noche
ha erigido su trono solitario;

II

Valles sin lindes, mares sin riberas,
cavernas, bosques densos y titánicos,
montañas que a los cielos desafían
y hunden la base en insondables lagos,
en lagos insondables siempre mudos
de misteriosos bordes escarpados,
gélidos lagos, cuyas muertas aguas
un Cielo copian tétrico y extraño.

III

Orillas de esos lagos que reflejan
siempre un Cielo fatídico y huraño
cerca de aquellos bosques gigantescos,
enfrente de esos negros océanos,
al pie de aquellos montes formidables,
de esas cavernas en los hondos antros,
vense a veces fantasmas silenciosos
que pasan a lo lejos sollozando,
fúnebres y dolientes... ¡son aquellos
amigos que por siempre nos dejaron,
caros amigos para siempre idos,
fuera del Tiempo y fuera del Espacio!

IV

Para el alma nutrida de pesares,
para el transido corazón, acaso
es el asilo de la paz suprema,
del reposo y la calma en Eldorado.
Pero el viajero que azorado cruza
la región no contempla sin espantos
que a los mortales ojos sus misterios
perennemente seguirán sellados,
así lo quiere la Deidad sombría
que tiene allí su imperio incontrastado.

V

Por esa senda desolada y triste
que recorren tan sólo ángeles malos,
senda fatal donde la Diosa Noche
ha erigido su trono solitario,
donde la inexplorada, última Thule
esfuma en sombras sus contornos vagos,
con el alma abrumada de pesares,
transido el corazón, he paseado...

Wildfires raged across Colorado earlier this summer. Now California, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon are feeling the heat. On August 14, 2012, numerous fires blazed across the four western states, burning through everything from sagebrush to grass to beetle-killed lodgepole pine forests.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of the fires on Aug 11, 2012. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fires.
Three large fires burned through coniferous forests in northern California: the Reading fire in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Chips fire in Plumas National Forest, and the Fort Complex fire in Klamath National Forest. The largest of the three (Chips) had consumed 57 square miles (148 square kilometers) and was 12 percent contained by August 14. The Reading fire had consumed 37 square miles and was 15 percent contained, whereas the Fort Complex Fire had burned 3 square miles and was 10 percent contained. All three were ignited by lightning. In Oregon, lightning also sparked the Barry Point fire, which had burned 68 square miles.
In northern Nevada, the Holloway, Hansen, and Willow fires burned through grass, brush, and sagebrush. The Holloway fire was the largest and had burned 676 square miles by August 14. The Willow and Hanson fires had burned 67 square miles and 20 square miles respectively. All three were ignited by lightning on August 5.
In Idaho, the Halstead fire burned through stands of beetle-killed lodgepole pines in Salmon-Challis National Forest. It had consumed 81 square miles. To the south, the Trinity Ridge fire had burned about 58 square miles. Lightning ignited the Halstead fire on July 27, whereas human activity started the Trinity Ridge fire.
According to statistics compiled by the National Interagency Fire Center, a total of 9,400 square miles had burned in the United States through August 14. That was above the ten-year average for that date, which was 7,750 square miles.

Music: Gulda - Mozart - Sonata in B flat major - Data of the Sonata - Data de la Sonata

Gulda - Mozart - Sonata in B flat major

The Piano Sonata in B-flat major, K. 333 (315c), was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Linz at the end of 1783.

Dating

There is no doubt that this sonata was first published on April 21, 1784 in Vienna by Christoph Torricella (along with K. 284 and K. 454, as op. 7). The actual date of composition, however, has proved more difficult to determine. In the first edition of his catalog (1862), Köchel gave the hypothetical date 1779, later clarified by Georges de Saint-Foix (1936) to "Salzburg, beginning of January–March 1779." However, Alfred Einstein, in the third edition of the Köchel catalog (1937), said that it was composed in "late summer 1778 in Paris." This date was maintained even until the sixth edition of the Köchel catalog (1964).

More recently, this date has been invalidated by the findings of Wolfgang Plath and Alan Tyson. On the basis of Mozart's script, Plath assigns the piece to the time around 1783/84, "likely not long before the appearance of the first print." Furthermore, Tyson convincingly demonstrates that the work was composed at the end of 1783, likely in November, around the same time as the "Linz Symphony", K. 425, when the Mozart couple made a stopover in Linz on their way back to Vienna from Salzburg. This new dating also fits stylistic criteria.[1]
Movements

The work is a sonata in three movements:

    Allegro
    Andante cantabile
    Allegretto grazioso

A typical performance takes about 23 minutes.

I. Allegro

The tune of the first movement is playful and lively. This simple melody is accompanied by the arpeggio-style chords played in the left hand. As the first few bars are established, the level gets higher and eventually restarts from a relatively lower level. The theme is repeated but then it varies and the climax builds slowly and ends with an arpeggio of C Major. The mood softens and a phrase is established which will be repeated 2 times in this key, but varied slightly by key. The first part slowly ends with the familiar arpeggio with the chord played (brokenly) and repeatedly.

The second part is introduced by varying the theme three times which leads to a minor key. It slowly establishes back to B-flat with a small spark that played the theme in minor key for a short time then slowly it builds up to a higher key.

The third part repeats the 1st part but in a higher key with few variations. It ends on the same key with a slight minor key change in the last few bars but building up to the key in time to end the first movement.

II. Andante cantabile

The second movement is an Andante Cantabile in E flat major. The movement opens with thirds in the right hand progressing to the more lyrical theme of the movement accompanied by flowing broken triads in the left hand. It soon modulates to B flat major for a 'minuet like' section. After this, the movement begins to modulate back to E flat major for a repeat of the exposition, however, after the first repeat, just as it seems to settle again in E flat major, the development begins in the G minor. From G minor it modulates to F minor, to C minor, to A flat major, to B flat minor and finally to E flat major at which point the recapitulation occurs. Throughout the second movement, chromaticism is present which occasionally evokes a slight sense of dissonance.

III. Allegretto

The third movement shows much similarity to the first by chord pattern and by music phrases. The first part starts simply but playfully. The theme is repeated but with the broken chords accompanying the melody. The mood slowly softens but a difficult melody is quickly established. It builds up and ends at a climax.

In the second part the first part is repeated until its course changes to a minor key. It then plays two phrases which will be repeated in different keys. The third part comes in quickly and unexpectedly. It comes to a section where the major and minor keys switch every few bars. It slowly comes back to the major key where it repeats the opening theme for the second time. It continues with phrases adapted from the first movement. Then comes a series of arpeggios which lead to a short pause preceding the final repeat of the first theme with accompaniment variations, ending the piece.
