A month and a half of continuous eruption has left the caldera of Veniamanof Volcano—one of the largest on the Alaskan Peninsula—coated with ash. Variable winds carried ash away from the eruption vent, leaving a radial pattern of dark streaks across the ice-filled caldera and the surrounding glaciers and snowfields.
The natural-color Landsat 8 image of Veniamanof (top) was collected on July 25, 2013. At the time, three separate, small plumes—one ash-rich and two steam-rich—rose from a 300-meter (1,000-foot) high cinder cone near the western rim of the caldera and the aptly-named Cone Glacier.
Sixteen days earlier (lower image), much less ash was visible. It is likely that ash from earlier stages of the eruption was hidden by fresh snow. From July 9–25, much of the snow melted during the long summer days (probably accelerated by the presence of the ash), and additional ash accumulated as the eruption continued.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) originally detected an eruption at Veniamanof on June 13, 2013. On July 25, AVO reported volcanic tremors, high surface temperatures, and nighttime glow. These signals indicated “an ongoing low-level eruption characterized by intermittent effusion of lava and emission of minor amounts of ash and steam.”

Antonio Machado y Sra.

Llanto de las virtudes y coplas por la muerte de Don Guido

Al fin, una pulmonía
mató a don Guido, y están
las campanas todo el dia
doblando por él ¡din-dan!

Murió don Guido, un señor,
de mozo muy jaranero,
muy galán y algo torero;
de viejo, gran rezador.

Dicen que tuvo un serrallo
este señor de Sevilla;
que era diestro
en manejar el caballo,
y un maestro
en refrescar manzanilla.

Cuando mermó su riqueza,
era su monomanía
pensar que pensar debía
en asentar la cabeza.

Y asentóla
de una manera española,
que fue casarse con una
doncella de gran fortuna
y repintar sus blasones,
hablar de las tradiciones
de su casa,
a escándalos y amoríos
poner tasa,
sordina a sus desvaríos.

Gran pagano,
se hizo hermano
de una santa cofradía;
el Jueves Santo salía,
llevando un cirio en la mano
-¡aquel trueno!-,
vestido de nazareno.
Hoy nos dice la campana
que han de llevarse mañana
al buen don Guido, muy serio,
camino del cementerio.

Buen don Guido, ya eres ido
y para siempre jamás...
Alguien dirá: ¿Qué dejaste?
Yo pregunto: ¿Qué llevaste
al mundo donde hoy estás?

¿Tu amor a los alamares
y a las sedas y a los oros,
y a la sangre de los toros
y al humo de los altares?

Buen don Guido y equipaje
¡buen viaje!...

El acá
y el allá,
caballero,
se ve en tu rostro marchito,
lo infinito:
cero, cero.

¡Oh las enjutas mejillas,
amarillas,
y los párpados de cera,
y la fina calavera
en la almohada del lecho!

¡Oh fin de una aristocracia!
La barba canosa y lacia
sobre el pecho;
metido en tosco sayal,
las yertas manos en cruz
¡tan formal!
el caballero andaluz.

El Mañana Efímero

La España de charanga y pandereta,
cerrado y sacristía,
devota de Frascuelo y de María,
de espíritu burlón y de alma quieta,
ha de tener su mármol y su día,
su infalible mañana y su poeta.
El vano ayer engendrará un mañana
vacío y ¡por ventura! pasajero.
Será un joven lechuzo y tarambana,
un sayón con hechuras de bolero;
a la moda de Francia realista,
un poco al uso de París pagano,
y al estilo de España especialista
en el vicio al alcance de la mano.
Esa España inferior que ora y bosteza,
vieja y tahúr, zaragatera y triste;
esa España inferior que ora y embiste
cuando se digna usar de la cabeza,
aún tendrá luengo parto de varones
amantes de sagradas tradiciones
y de sagradas formas y maneras;
florecerán las barbas apostólicas
y otras calvas en otras cálaveras
brillarán, venerables y católicas.
El vano ayer engendrará un mañana
vacío y ¡por ventura! pasajero,
la sombra de un lechuzo tarambana,
de un sayón con hechuras de bolero,
el vacuo ayer dará un mañana huero.
Como la náusea de un borracho ahito
de vino malo, un rojo sol corona
de heces turbias las cumbres de granito;
hay un mañana estomagante escrito
en la tarde pragmática y dulzona.
Mas otra España nace,
la España del cincel y de la maza,
con esa eterna juventud que se hace
del pasado macizo de la raza.
Una España implacable y redentora,
España que alborea
con un hacha en la mano vengadora;
España de la rabia y de la idea.

Myanmar’s Irrawady and Chirtdwin Rivers were swollen with monsoon rains when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired the top image on August 2, 2013. While floods happen regularly during the summer monsoon, the 2013 floods have forced more than 30,000 people from their homes in the Kayin state, southeast of the area shown in this image. (The floods in Kayin are not visible because of persistent clouds.) The lower image, also from Aqua MODIS, shows the Irrawady and Chirtdwin Rivers on June 15, 2013, at the beginning of the monsoon season.

La poesia prudente...

La poesia prudente
e gli uomini
prudenti
durano
solo lo stretto
necessario
per morire
tranquilli

Charles Bukowski ( 1920-1994)

sprecare la vita

lamentele inifme e triviali,
costantemente ripetute,
possono far ammattire un santo,
per tacere di un bravo ragazzo
qualunque ( me)
e il peggio è che chi
si lamenta
nemmeno si accorge di farlo
a meno che non glielo dici
e perfino se glielo dici
non ci crede.
e così non si conclude
niente
ed è solo un altro giorno
sprecato,
preso a calci,
mutilato
mentre il Buddha
siede nell´angolo
e sorride.

Poetry: Alfred Tennyson - Battle Of Brunanburgh - Beautiful city - Links to more poetry by A.T.

Battle Of Brunanburgh

Athelstan King,
Lord among Earls,
Bracelet-bestower and
Baron of Barons,
He with his brother,
Edmund Atheling,
Gaining a lifelong
Glory in battle,
Slew with the sword-edge
There by Brunanburh,
Brake the shield-wall,
Hew'd the lindenwood,
Hack'd the battleshield,
Sons of Edward with hammer'd brands.

Theirs was a greatness
Got from their Grandsires--
Theirs that so often in
Strife with their enemies
Struck for their hoards and their hearths and their homes.

Bow'd the spoiler,
Bent the Scotsman,
Fell the shipcrews
Doom'd to the death.
All the field with blood of the fighters
Flow'd, from when first the great
Sun-star of morningtide,
Lamp of the Lord God
Lord everlasting,
Glode over earth till the glorious creature
Sank to his setting.
There lay many a man
Marr'd by the javelin,
Men of the Northland
Shot over shield.
There was the Scotsman
Weary of war.

We the West-Saxons,
Long as the daylight
Lasted, in companies
Troubled the track of the host that we hated;
Grimly with swords that were sharp from the grindstone
Fiercely we hack'd at the flyers before us.

Mighty the Mercian,
Hard was his hand-play,
Sparing not any of
Those that with Anlaf,
Warriors over the
Weltering waters
Borne in the bark's-bosom,
Drew to this island:
Doom'd to the death.

Five young kings put asleep by the sword-stroke,
Seven strong earls of the army of Anlaf
Fell on the war-field, numberless numbers,
Shipmen and Scotsmen.

Then the Norse leader,
Dire was his need of it,
Few were his following,
Fled to his warship;
Fleeted his vessel to sea with the king in it,
Saving his life on the fallow flood.

Also the crafty one,
Constantinus,
Crept to his north again,
Hoar-headed hero!

Slender warrant had
He to be proud of
The welcome of war-knives--
He that was reft of his
Folk and his friends that had
Fallen in conflict,
Leaving his son too
Lost in the carnage,
Mangled to morsels,
A youngster in war!

Slender reason had
He to be glad of
The clash of the war-glaive--
Traitor and trickster
And spurner of treaties--
He nor had Anlaf
With armies so broken
A reason for bragging
That they had the better
In perils of battle
On places of slaughter--
The struggle of standards,
The rush of the javelins,
The crash of the charges,
The wielding of weapons--
The play that they play'd with
The children of Edward.

Then with their nail'd prows
Parted the Norsemen, a
Blood-redden'd relic of
Javelins over
The jarring breaker, the deep-sea billow,
Shaping their way toward Dyflen again,
Shamed in their souls.

Also the brethren,
King and Atheling,
Each in his glory,
Went to his own in his own West-Saxonland,
Glad of the war.

Many a carcase they left to be carrion,
Many a livid one, many a sallow-skin--
Left for the white-tail'd eagle to tear it, and
Left for the horny-nibb'd raven to rend it, and
Gave to the garbaging war-hawk to gorge it, and
That gray beast, the wolf of the weald.

Never had huger
Slaughter of heroes
Slain by the sword-edge--
Such as old writers
Have writ of in histories--
Hapt in this isle, since
Up from the East hither
Saxon and Angle from
Over the broad billow
Broke into Britain with
Haughty war-workers who
Harried the Welshman, when
Earls that were lured by the
Hunger of glory gat
Hold of the land.

Beautiful city

Beautiful city, the centre and crater of European confusion,
O you with your passionate shriek for the rights of an equal
humanity,
How often your Re-volution has proven but E-volution
Roll’d again back on itself in the tides of a civic insanity!
