Poesie - Poetry: Francesco Petrarca - Se la mia vita da l'aspro tormento - If my life of bitter torment and of tears - Quando fra l'altre donne ad ora ad ora - When from hour to hour among the other ladies - Links

donna, de' be' vostr'occhi il lume spento,

e i cape' d'oro fin farsi d'argento,
et lassar le ghirlande e i verdi panni,
e 'l viso scolorir che ne' miei danni
a llamentar mi fa pauroso et lento:

pur mi darà tanta baldanza Amore
ch'i' vi discovrirò de' mei martiri
qua' sono stati gli anni, e i giorni et l'ore;

If my life of bitter torment and of tears
could be derided more, and made more troubled,
that I might see, by virtue of your later years,
lady, the light quenched of your beautiful eyes,

and the golden hair spun fine as silver,
and the garland laid aside and the green clothes,
and the delicate face fade, that makes me
fearful and slow to go weeping:

then Love might grant me such confidence
that I'd reveal to you my sufferings
the years lived through, and the days and hours:

and if time is opposed to true desire,
it does not mean no food would nourish my grief:
I might draw some from slow sighs.

quanto ciascuna è men bella di lei

pocho prezando quel ch'ogni huom desia;

When from hour to hour among the other ladies
Love appears in her beautiful face,
by as much as their beauty is less than hers
by so much the desire that en-amours me grows.

I bless the place, the time, and the hour
in which my eyes gazed to such a height,
and I say: My spirit, give thanks enough
that you were then found worthy of such honour.

From her to you comes loving thought,
that leads to highest good, while you pursue it,
counting as little what all men desire:

from her comes that spirit full of grace
that shows you heaven by the true way':
so that in hope I fly, already, to the heights.

Beetle Fossil
Insecta Order Coleoptera, Family Dysticidae
Geological Time: Lower Cretaceous (~125 m.y.a.)
Size (25.4 mm = 1 inch): Insect fossil is 13 mm long, Matrix: 108 mm by 110 mm
Fossil Site: Yixian Formation, Chaoyang, Beipiao, Liaoning Province of China

Description: The Class Insecta is well represented in Liaoning and Hebei Provinces of China, with over 500 species referable to over 100 families based upon over 10,000 specimens. This fantastic diversity and exquisite detail is unprecedented throughout the world. This example is a well-preserved scarab beetle . This is a detailed specimen from the dim past of 125 million years ago belonging to the diving beetles.

Cf Architiphia rasitsyni
Insects Order Hymenoptera, Family Tiphiidae
Geological Time: Lower Cretaceous, Late Aptian-Cenomanian (108-92 million years ago)
Size (25.4 mm = 1 inch): Insect fossil is 21 mm with 20 mm wingspan Matrix: 95 mm by 90 mm
Fossil Site: Crato Formation, Nova Olinda Member, Ceara, Brazil

Description: The Araripe Basin of Brazil is home to a fantastic array of exquisitely-detailed Early Cretaceous fossils, some of which have been preserved in three dimensions. While the entire formation has until the last decade or so been termed the Santana Formation, David Martill has separated out the slightly older insect-bearing strata as the Nova Olinda Member of the Crato Formation. Quarrying operations for the purposes of obtaining paving stones exposes the remarkable insect fauna in much the same way that quarrying for lithographic limestone in Solnhofen has afforded a panoply of wonderfully-preserved Jurassic fossils in Germany. In addition to the many orders of insects, spiders, scorpions, decapod crustaceans, and many plants have been found. Interestingly, to date no pterosaurs or terrestrial vertebrates have been found, in stark contrast to the overlying Santana Formation deposits. This fine example shows a wasp in dorsal view.

Insects Order Coleoptera, Family Cupedidae
Geological Time: Early Cretaceous
Size (25.4 mm = 1 inch): Insect fossil is 20 mm long, Matrix: 105 mm by 40 mm
Fossil Site: Yixian Formation, Huangbangi Valley, Beipiao, Liaoning Province of China

Description: The Class Insecta is well represented in Liaoning and Hebei Provinces of China, with over 500 species referable to over 100 families based upon over 10,000 specimens. This fantastic diversity and exquisite detail is unprecedented throughout the world. This example is a negative impression of a beetle with distinctively-ornamented elytra of the family Clupedidae. This distinctive pattern of sculpted pits on the elytra has allowed tracking of these most obvious beetles from their “beetleoid” ancestry in the Permian. True beetles of this morphology are known from the Late Triassic. They radiated throughout the Jurassic, and then declined during the Cretaceous, with some 9 genera and 30 species persisting to the Recent. While many fossil consist of at most a single elytron, we have here a complete example of this most distinctive of beetles.

The Glory of the New Year
acquired December 21, 2013

On December 21, 2013—the summer or winter solstice, depending on your hemisphere—the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image. Off the Pacific coast of Peru, a rainbow-like optical effect known as a “glory” added a splash of color amidst the gray and white fluff of marine stratocumulus clouds.
For viewers on or near Earth’s surface, glories are occasionally visible as concentric rings of color in thin clouds or in fog. They appear in the opposite direction from the Sun as light is scattered backwards (diffraction) through airborne water droplets toward the viewer. The ring is centered around a point or shadow.
A similar phenomenon is sometimes visible from space, though a quick look at Earth Observatory’s image archives shows that space-viewed glories are not necessarily circular. To acquire images like the one above, the MODIS instrument scans the Earth in swaths perpendicular to the path of the satellite. The swaths are horizontal cross sections through the rings of the glory, so it appears instead as two elongated bands of color that run parallel to the path of the satellite.
The clouds in this image “are pretty good example of ‘closed cell’ marine stratocumulus,” writes Joe Munchak, an atmospheric scientist based at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “These are typified by large regions of weak ascending air (forming the clouds) surrounded by narrow regions of descending air—the thin lines of clear air or thinner clouds surrounding the cells.”
