According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was the result of normal faulting at an intermediate depth in the Arabian plate lithosphere, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) beneath the Earth's surface. In January of 2011, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the east, in a similar tectonic environment.
