Music: Madeleine Peyroux - The Summer Wind - Jazz - Lyrics

Madeleine Peyroux - The Summer Wind

The summer wind
Came blowing in
From across the sea
It lingered there
So warm and fair
To walk with me
All summer long
We sang a song
And strolled on golden sand
Two sweethearts
And the summer wind

Like painted kites
Those days and nights
Went flyin by
The world was new
Beneath a blue
Umbrella sky
Then softer than
A piper man
One day it called to you
And I lost you
To the summer wind

The autumn wind
And the winter wind
Have come and gone
And still the days
Those lonely days
Go on and on
And guess who sighs her lullabies
Through nights that never end
My fickle friend
The summer wind
The summer wind

NASA: Australia - Fires Around Sydney - 10.28.13

Fires Around Sydney, Australia

October 17, 2013, will go down as one of the worst fire days New South Wales has seen in recent years. By 6:30 p.m. local time, 90 wildfires burned, 36 of them out of control and threatening communities near Sydney, Australia. Dry vegetation, high temperatures (above 34° Celsius or 93° Fahrenheit), and erratic winds gusting to 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour combined to create extremely dangerous fire conditions.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image at 2:50 p.m. (3:50 Universal Time) on October 17. Fires are outlined in red; to the east, smoke pollution was a problem in populated coastal communities. The densest plume hangs directly over Sydney, though the brighter white streak is probably a cloud.
The largest fire shown here is the State Mine fire, burning in the Blue Mountains near the Lithgow area. The fire has burned more than 20,000 hectares and damaged an unknown number of properties, according to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. To the southeast is the dangerous Linksview Road fire, burning near the community of Springwood.
Thousands of people have been evacuated because of the fires, and all affected communities have received emergency warnings. Between the State Mine and Linksview Road fires, hundreds of homes may have been destroyed, ABC News reported.
The third large fire in the image is the Hall Road fire. Despite its size, the blaze has caused little damage and is nearly under control. It may be a few days before the other fires are under control. Weather conditions are expected to improve, but the fire danger will remain high.

Tale: Ana Maria Shua - Microfiction - Shipwreck - Bio data - Links

SHIPWRECK

Lower the jib! orders the captain. Lower the jib! repeats the first mate. Luff starboard! shouts the captain. Luff starboard! repeats the first mate. Careful with the bowsprit! shouts the captain. The bowsprit! repeats the first mate. Take down the mizzenmast! shouts the captain. The mizzenmast! repeats the first mate. Meanwhile, the storm's getting worse and we sailors are running around the deck confused. If we can't find a dictionary soon, we're going to wreck for sure.

Translated from Spanish by Steven Stewart
Microfiction
Bison Books, University of Nebraska Press, 2010

Ana María Shua (born in Buenos Aires, April 22, 1951) is an Argentine writer who has published over eighty books in numerous genres including: novels, short stories, micro fiction, poetry, drama, children's literature, books of humor and Jewish folklore, anthologies, film scripts, journalistic articles, and essays. Her writing has been translated into many languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Korean, Japanese, Bulgarian, and Serbian.[1] Her stories appear in anthologies throughout the world. She has received numerous national and international awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and is one of Argentina’s premier living writers. She is particularly known in the Spanish-speaking world on both sides of the Atlantic as “the Queen of the Microstory.”[1][2][3][4]

Biography

Shua published her first book on poetry, El sol y yo, when she was fifteen years old,[5] in 1967, for which she received the Honor Strip given by the Argentine Society of Writers. She studied at the University of Buenos Aires and obtained a master's degree in Arts and Literature.[citation needed] During the last military dictatorship in Argentina, often called the National Reorganization Process, she was exiled to France where she worked for the Spanish magazine Cambio 16.[citation needed] Once back in Argentina, she published her first novel, entitled Soy paciente, in 1980, for which she won an award given by Losada publishing house.[citation needed] In 1984, she published La sueñera, a collection of micro fiction. She has worked as a journalist, a publicist, and a screenwriter, adapting some of her writings.[citation needed] She has also written books for children, for which she received some international awards.[citation needed]
