The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image of Tropical Storm Damrey on July 30, 2012. The same day that MODIS acquired this image, the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Damrey was located roughly 175 nautical miles (325 kilometers) east-northeast of Iwo Jima (Iwo To), Japan. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 knots (85 kilometers per hour) with gusts up to 55 knots (100 kilometers per hour).
The JTWC’s projected storm track showed Damrey making landfall between August 2 and 3, 2011. AccuWeather reported that the storm might bring heavy rains and high winds.
